The London Eye stands on the South Bank of the Thames, beside County Hall between Westminster and Hungerford bridges, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament. Designed by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield as the city's contribution to the millennium and opened to the public in March 2000, the 135-metre cantilevered wheel was the tallest of its kind on earth for six years and remains the most-visited paid attraction in the United Kingdom. A single 30-minute rotation in one of 32 sealed, air-conditioned capsules — one for each London borough — gives you the most complete panoramic view of the capital, from the Shard and the dome of St Paul's to Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park and the rolling green of Windsor Great Park on the clearest days. Tickets are timed and sell out fast for sunset slots, weekends and English school holidays. For planning, see our visitors guide, the latest opening hours and our best time to visit page.

The smartest way to ride the London Eye

Skip the Line

Walk past the standard queue with a pre-booked timed-entry ticket or upgrade to Fast-Track for priority boarding. In peak season the wheel sees 10,000+ riders a day and walk-up queues routinely stretch 60–90 minutes — booking ahead saves the entire wait.

🎬

4D Cinema Included

Every ticket includes free entry to the adjoining London Eye 4D Cinema Experience — a 4-minute immersive short film with mist, bubbles and wind effects that warms you up for the ride itself. Shows run all day, no extra booking needed.

Free Cancellation

Plans change and so does British weather. Cancel up to 24 hours before your slot for a full refund — no questions asked, no fees, no fine print. The Eye also closes occasionally for high winds and we automatically rebook you free of charge.

32 capsules, one for each London borough

Look closely as the wheel turns and you'll notice the capsules are numbered from 1 to 33 — with no number 13. There are 32 capsules in total, one for each of the 32 London boroughs, each weighing 10 tonnes and air-conditioned, with 360-degree glass and a temperature-controlled interior that keeps the view smear-free through the Thames mist. The wheel itself, designed by architects David Marks and Julia Barfield, was originally entered into a Sunday Times competition for a structure to commemorate the third millennium. No site won the competition outright, but the couple pursued the project privately, and on the eve of the year 2000 Tony Blair formally opened what was then the tallest cantilevered observation wheel in the world.

A full rotation takes 30 minutes — slow enough for the wheel to keep turning without stopping while passengers board, fast enough that you'll see St Paul's, the Shard, the BT Tower, Wembley and on the very clearest days the green hills of Windsor before you're back on solid ground. The lifespan was originally meant to be five years; twenty-six years on, the Eye is still the most-visited paid attraction in the United Kingdom and the silhouette has become the city's defining modern landmark.

How It Works

Ride the London Eye in 3 simple steps

1

Choose Your Slot

Pick a date and 30-minute timed-entry slot. Choose Standard (the regular queue), Fast-Track (priority boarding, recommended on weekends and at sunset), Champagne (a glass of Pommery during the ride) or Private Capsule for the exclusive use of an entire pod for up to 16 people.

2

Book Online

Secure checkout with instant email confirmation. Your mobile ticket arrives in minutes, ready to scan on the Queen's Walk at the boarding host — no printing, no waiting at the box office, no surprises at the door.

3

Show at Entry

On the day, walk along the Queen's Walk on the South Bank to the boarding deck. Clear a quick bag check, scan your ticket and step into your capsule — the wheel doesn't stop, so boarding is a smooth walk-on while it's slowly turning at less than 1 km/h.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you ride

How much are London Eye tickets?
Online advance prices for 2026 start at £37 Standard Adult, £33 Standard Child (3–15), £49 Fast-Track Adult, £45 Fast-Track Child, £55–65 Champagne, and from £600 for a Private Capsule for up to 16 guests. Under-3s ride free on a parent's lap. Walk-up tickets are around £12 more across all categories.
Do I need to book in advance?
Strongly recommended. The Eye sells more than 3 million tickets a year and slots routinely fill on weekends, English school holidays and at sunset. Booking online also saves around £12 per ticket versus the walk-up rate. See our best time to visit page for quieter slots.
Where exactly is the London Eye?
On the South Bank of the Thames, next to County Hall between Westminster and Hungerford bridges, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament. Full address: Riverside Building, County Hall, Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7PB. Nearest tube is Waterloo (5 min walk). Full directions on our visitors guide.
How long does the ride take?
One full rotation takes 30 minutes from boarding to disembarking. Plan around 60 minutes total at the site to include security, the 4D Cinema Experience (included free, 4 minutes) and a few moments for photos at the base. Allow 90 minutes if you're joining the Champagne Experience.
Which days is the Eye open?
Daily except Christmas Day (25 December) and a two-week annual maintenance closure in January (5–18 January 2026). Hours vary by season — 11:00–18:00 weekdays Sept–May, 10:00–20:30 weekends and June–August. See opening hours for full details.
Can I take photos during the ride?
Yes — photography (including phone and DSLR) is fully welcome inside the capsules and on the boarding deck. Tripods are not allowed inside the capsules but selfie sticks are fine. The full list of restrictions is on our rules & regulations page.
Is the Eye wheelchair accessible?
Yes — fully. Each capsule can accommodate up to two wheelchair users (max width 94 cm), with a total of eight wheelchair users on the wheel at any one time. Wheelchair slots fill quickly at peak times so advance booking is strongly recommended. Full details on our accessibility page.
Are children free?
Children under 3 ride free on a parent's lap, no ticket needed. Ages 3–15 pay the Child rate (£33 Standard, £45 Fast-Track). See free & reduced tickets for the full eligibility list.
Is the 4D Cinema worth doing?
Yes — and it's included free with every ticket. The 4-minute immersive short film, with mist, wind and bubble effects, is the official warm-up to the ride itself. Shows run continuously throughout the day, no separate booking required. Best done before boarding the wheel.
What if it's windy or raining?
The capsules are fully enclosed and air-conditioned, so rain has no effect on the ride itself. Heavy winds (above ~35 mph) can cause the wheel to close for safety. If your ride is cancelled for weather, we automatically refund or rebook you free of charge — and free 24-hour cancellation covers you if the forecast looks grim.
